The Guards’ Tent Roasted Brown

Design: Daniel Långelid

When Gustav III of Sweden inherited Drottningholm palace in 1777, he planned several new buildings in the Park. Their purpose was to create atmosphere, give unexpected views and to form backdrops for Court theatrical events.
One of these buildings is the Guards’ Tent from 1782. The entire facade is stripe painted to resemble a canvas tent, when in fact it is made of sheet metal.
Although The Guards’ Tent appears as mere decoration in the Park it does in fact conceal a purpose – barracks for the Royal Guards.
